About the Photographer

Tomki Němec (born 1963) is one of the leading Czech documentary photographers and photojournalists. He began gaining recognition in the 1980s, primarily through the unofficial Czech photography scene. In the early 1990s, he served as the personal photographer to Czechoslovak President Václav Havel, and in 2001 published an acclaimed book featuring images from Havel’s first presidential term. Němec is a two-time winner of the prestigious World Press Photo contest and has contributed to numerous Czech and international publications.

His black-and-white documentary work, which forms the foundation of both his personal oeuvre and this book, spans both domestic and international locations. His recurring theme is the “ordinary” person in everyday situations—images that often reveal something about personal destiny, but also reflect the weight of history and politics. A hallmark of Němec’s photography is its compositional precision.

About the Fototorst Series

This is the 29th volume in the Fototorst monographic series, which comprises 38 publications dedicated to the work of both renowned and lesser-known Czech photographers. The unified design of square-format books—featuring black-and-white or color photographs, high-quality printing, and insightful bilingual (Czech–English) essays—offers an optimal platform for presenting and promoting the work of photographers whose art spans the last 120 years. Several volumes in the series are also of significant art-historical value, introducing readers to experimental photographic projects or previously unknown archival materials.
