Dinner with King Carl XVI Gustaf, Stockholm, May 22, 1991

The Havels. The First Couple. Olga and Václav. I never posed them—they didn’t like it, and neither did I. I prefer photographing spontaneous moments rather than arranging scenes. In this case, however, the President asked me to do so, so it was clear.

Václav had a new tailcoat, probably rented—at least that’s how I vaguely remember it. I wouldn’t swear to it, though. In any case, a beautiful couple. I was not allowed to accompany them to the ceremonial dinner with the King and the Queen Mother. Protocol can sometimes be a photographer’s “enemy.”

Product detailed description

EDITION 17×17 is a collection of photographs presented in a clean, minimalist concept—as artifacts in a compact, smaller, and more affordable format.

Photographs from the 17×17 edition are mounted in a wooden frame with a 1 cm profile, made of natural oak. The image area measures 17 × 11 cm. The overall frame size is 26 × 26 cm. Each photograph is mounted in a white mat with a beveled cut. Some versions are set in frames with a 3 cm depth, adjusted so that the photograph appears to “float” or be suspended in space (see photo). The frame glass has a UV-protective museum-grade coating.
Each photograph is signed on the reverse, accompanied by a caption indicating the place and date of origin. The author’s signature on the back is visible even when framed. If you prefer your own mounting, i.e., you want only the photograph without the frame, mat, and UV glass, please choose the “without frame” option.

As the author of the photographic work, I always strive—beyond the visual experience—to provide maximum technical quality at the highest gallery level. I print my photographs on archival papers by the German company Hahnemühle or the French company Canson, which meet the highest standards of preservation and quality. All materials are archival and pH-neutral. When displaying photographs, I recommend observing standard practices—meaning that the photograph (like a painting or graphic work) should not be exposed to direct sunlight, humidity, or high temperatures, etc.

The photographs are intended for personal use only, for display in homes or other private spaces. Any other use—such as display in public spaces or institutions, online publication, or publication in print/media, or any other form of use—is possible only with the author’s written consent.
