Departure, Cabo da Roca, Portugal, December 14, 1990

Perhaps only two minutes—maybe even less—separated the making of this photograph, taken on the same beach at the westernmost point of Europe, from the moment when Václav Havel reached the sea and was surprised by a breaking wave.

From time to time it happens that I press the camera shutter and my heart starts pounding, because I know that it’s there. When I photographed the president walking away, leaving his footprints in the sand, from the very first instant I pressed the shutter I wished for the impossible—that the moment when symbolism would turn into reality would never come.

With Václav Havel’s departure “up there,” this photograph has quite possibly become my best-known image.

Detailed information

Product detailed description

EDITION 17×17 is a collection of photographs offered as objects in a clean, minimalist concept—compact, smaller, and more affordable in format.

This photograph from the 17×17 Edition is mounted in a wooden frame with a 1 cm profile, made of natural oak. The image area measures 10 × 15 cm. The overall frame size is 26 × 26 cm. The photograph is mounted in a white mat with a bevel cut. Some versions are presented in a frame with a three-centimetre depth, adjusted so that the photograph appears to “float” in space—see photo. The glass is museum-grade with a UV-protective layer. The photograph is signed on the back and includes a caption stating the place and date of origin. The author’s signature on the reverse of the photograph remains visible even when framed.

As the author of the photographic work, I always strive—beyond the visual experience—to provide the highest possible technical quality, meeting top gallery standards. I print my photographs on archival papers from the German company Hahnemühle or the French company Canson, which meet the highest requirements for longevity and quality. All materials are archival and pH-neutral. When displaying photographs, I recommend following standard fine-art handling practices—namely, avoiding direct sunlight, humidity, and high temperatures.

The photographs are intended for personal use only, for display in homes or other private spaces. Any other form of use—such as display in public spaces or institutions, online publication, print/media use, or any other use—is permitted only with the author’s written consent.
