Václav Havel with Ivan Martin Jirous, Trutnov, August 23, 2008

Citizen Havel and citizen Jirous. Two seniors.
Backstage at the Open Air Trutnov rock festival, also known as the Trutnov Woodstock, which Václav Havel visited whenever he spent August at his cottage in Hrádeček. For me, this is a symbolic meeting of two giants, connected by a life lived without freedom. Both prisoners of conscience. Both persecuted by the Communists and their collaborators. Both passed away in the same year, 2011.
The heroes of my life. #theynevergaveup

Dinner with King Carl XVI Gustaf, Stockholm, May 22, 1991

The Havels. The First Couple. Olga and Václav. I never posed them—they didn’t like it, and neither did I. I prefer photographing spontaneous moments rather than arranging scenes. In this case, the President asked me, so that settled it. Václav was wearing a new tailcoat—probably rented, as I vaguely recall. I wouldn’t swear to it, though. In any case, a beautiful couple. I could no longer accompany them to the formal dinner with the King and the Queen Mother. Protocol can sometimes be a photographer’s “enemy.”

Václav Havel, an Unplanned Stop at Ruzyně Prison
Prague, March 17, 1990

On his way to the airport—where he was to depart by helicopter for a meeting with Solidarity leader Lech Wałęsa—Václav Havel made an unplanned visit to Ruzyně Prison. Just a year earlier, he himself had been held there in pre-trial detention.
The photograph was taken moments before the gate opened, after the president knocked on it. The subsequent reaction of the prison service was directly proportional to their surprise at this impromptu visit…

Václav Havel, České Budějovice, 1990
“God Is on the Tribune”

A photograph that encapsulates everything people felt about their newly gained freedom after the fall of the Iron Curtain. A new era, filled with hope for the fulfillment of new dreams. People gathered in the square watch and listen with reverence to Václav Havel’s speech.

Václav Havel, Ottawa, Canada, 1990

To the amusement of the entire entourage—including personal bodyguards and police—Václav Havel swung himself onto the saddle of a Harley-Davidson police motorcycle belonging to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Accompanied by growling sounds coming from his mouth (“grrrrhhhrrr”), he put on a wild, playful show, riding one of the true legends of the motorcycle world.

Václav Havel, New York, February 1990 – A Dream Journey

A walk through Manhattan during a brief moment of free time…
The first state visit of President Václav Havel to the United States, less than two months after his election, was—thanks to the atmosphere of change following the fall of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia—often referred to as “The Dream Journey.”
